Volleyball Splits in Season Opening Doubleheader

Salinas, Calif. - The Solano women's volleyball team split in its season opening doubleheader, falling to Delta before rebounding with a four-set win over host, Hartnell, on Friday afternoon.

Set scores against Delta were 25-20, 25-17, and 25-13, and set scores against Hartnell were 25-17, 23-25, 25-15, 25-17.

Against Delta, freshman Sammy Brown led the Falcons with seven kills, and sophomore Rocelyn Hongria added five with a solo block and nine digs. Sophomore Mylei Moli chipped in four kills of her own. Defensively, Kailyn Kaiser tallied 10 digs. And sophomore Anaya Rodriguez directed the offense with 11 assists, adding seven digs. 

"Delta was a very scrappy team," Solano women's volleyball head coach Darla Williams said. "It was a very competitive match with some amazing rallies. THe ball just didn't fall our way all the time."

And against Hartnell, sophomore Kailyn Kaiser led the defense with 21 digs, while Brown earned a double-double with 12 kills, 18 digs, and added errorless serving on 10 attempts. Freshman Dani Rydjord also added 12 kills with four blocks, while Moli counted 11 digs and two aces. Rodriguez counted her first double-double of the season with 23 assists and 12 digs, adding a pair of aces. 

"The match against Hartnell was a full team effort," Williams said. "We had a starting player go down at the start of the first set, and the team regrouped and got the job done. We were very impressed with the team's focus to win the match."

Solano (1-1) returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 1 when it heads to Folsom Lake to face Sequoias at 4 p.m. and the host team, Folsom Lake, at 6 p.m. Due to continued COVID-19 protocols, fans will not be allowed for either match.
